Plan a first hanfu experience around three decisions: what you want to wear, what the booking includes, and where you may take photographs. Choose a short, manageable outing with time for fitting, styling and returning the clothing. Arrange bookings directly with the studio and any attraction you plan to visit.

Choose a setting that fits your day

Hangzhou offers one starting point. The city's official English portal describes studios near West Lake combining clothing rental, makeup and photography, with visitors heading towards places such as Broken Bridge and Deshou Palace. Treat these as location ideas and check each site's current access rules before planning a shoot. [1]

Start with a neighbourhood already on your itinerary. Map the studio, photo location and return journey. Ask how far you will walk in the outfit, whether changing facilities are available, and what happens if rain changes the plan.

Get the package details in writing

A clothing rental and a photography session can be different products. Immersive China Travel, for example, lists both a styled rental excluding photography and a separate package with a photo session and specified image delivery. Its listing also describes advance reservations, sizing arrangements and deposits for some options. Check the exact option you select. [2]

  • Clothing: available sizes, garment styles, accessories, rental hours and the return address.
  • Styling: whether hair and makeup are included, how long preparation takes, and whether you can choose a simpler look.
  • Photography: session length, locations, number of delivered images, retouching, delivery date and extra charges.
  • Payment: total cost, accepted payment methods, deposit return, cancellation terms and charges for late returns or damage.
  • Communication: a language you can use together, the meeting point and a contact for the day.

Confirm attraction entry separately

Check the venue's own website before fixing your styling appointment. For example, the Palace Museum states that it does not sell same-day tickets and that foreign visitors provide passport numbers when booking online. Leave time between styling and your reserved entry. A studio reservation should never be taken as confirmation of museum admission. [3]

Use the fitting to test comfort

Bring a reference image and ask the staff to explain the outfit's name and inspiration. Before leaving, try walking, sitting and using steps; ask for adjustments if the hem catches or the fastening slips. Confirm how to manage long sleeves, remove accessories and return each item. Choose footwear you can comfortably walk in, and plan for the day's weather.

Make photographs without disrupting the visit

Follow signs and staff instructions at every location. The Palace Museum's visitor guidance prohibits flash and tripods in exhibition halls and notes that photography of exhibits is restricted in certain exhibitions. Check permission for your planned session and equipment with the venue itself. [4]

A photo package does not establish permission to shoot inside a venue. Before paying, confirm directly with the venue whether your planned session, photographer and equipment are allowed.

Keep entrances and walkways clear, avoid touching historic surfaces for a pose, and ask before including other visitors in a portrait. Before returning the outfit, check pockets and count accessories with the studio. Keep the receipt and agreed photo-delivery details so you know when and how to collect your images.
